Abstract

ABSTRACT
This research examines economic and demographic
factors which have led the German government
represented by Chancellor Angela Merkel to openly
accepts the arrival of refugees, generally coming
from Syria and reaching its peak in 2015. Despite
the opposition from some parts of German public,
political parties, and even from internal members
of CDU party, Chancellor Markel remained adamant
with his open attitude towards the refugees.
The research elaborates Robert Atanasovski’s ideas,
one of which says that Germany’s attitude is at least
motivated by German economic and demographic
interests. Based on data from various resources,
German current economy has not been affected by
the Euro crisis damaging many European countries.
However, such well perfomed economy is under
threat of aging population. This research concludes
that German economic and demographic factors
can be regarded as a justification for Angela Merkel’s
open attitude toward refugees from Syria, without
having to ignore other factors not discussed
in this research.
