IMPACT OF OVER-CROWDING IN CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTION ON HEALTH OF PRISONER
Abstract
Over Crowded in Correctional Institutions is a crucial problem. Most of the Correctional Institutions and State Detention Houses (Detention Centers) in Indonesia have experienced over crowded. Data at the Narcotics Class IIA Prisons Institute, on 30 October 2018 showed that the number of Prisoners was 2,448 while the capacity was 1,084. Over capacity is 143%. The impact of Over Crowded caused a lot of bad things in prisons and detention centers. One of them is poor prisoner health. In terms of health (air circulation, etc.) and comfort is not feasible. This has a negative impact on prisoners' health. As a result, the spread of infectious diseases in prisons and remand centers is very easy. Residential rooms that are crowded, less ventilated, less sunlight and humid accelerate disease transmission. This study aims to determine the impact of overcrowded on the health of prisoners in prisons. This research was carried out at the Narcotics Prison Class IIA Jakarta. This study uses a qualitative research approach. This research was conducted in October 2018. Data collected by observation techniques, interviews and document studies were then processed and analyzed qualitatively. The results of this study indicate that Jakarta Narcotics Prison Class IIA that was over crowded turned out to have a major impact on prisoners' health. It can be seen an increase in the number of types of diseases suffered by prisoners. Number of medical staffs and paramedical staffs is limited.Keyword: Prison, prisoners, over-crowded, healthDownloads
